'Living Without Laws: Slab City, USA' served as visual inspiration for Ana Lily Amirpour's latest film.

Back in 2012, VICE released Living Without Laws: Slab City, USA, an installment in our Americana documentary series that focused on an area of the California desert known as Slab City—referred to by its residents as "the last free place in America." As it turns out, the documentary was one of many works that filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) found visual inspiration in while making her latest film, the VICE-produced surrealist cannibal thriller The Bad Batch.
