Lose Yourself in 3D Lights at Four Tet's Upcoming Sydney Show

London-based media collective Squidsoup have been steadily producing impressive, immersive lighting installations, and we've been eagerly following their output. This January they’re bringing their shine to Sydney in a special show with Four Tet at the Opera House. They’ve designed a light show to compliment, and respond to, Four Tet’s music in what will make for an all-encompassing experience.

“Four Tet's latest album Morning/Evening lends itself perfectly to the kind of slowly developing visual structures we have been developing,” Squidsoup tells The Creators Project. They’ve done two events in the UK with Four Tet already—one at Manchester International Festival and another at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (ICA)—as well as working with other musicians like Purity Ring on the lighting for their world tour earlier this year.

The Opera House piece will be a variant of their Submergence installation (above). Whereas Submergence was a walkthrough space, this time the lights will be on stage and will look like "a large volume of light" just behind Four Tet. It will use the same volumetric techniques seen in their previous work, responding to the live performance.

“We have built a set of software tools that enable us to create 3D dynamic visuals—particle systems, flow systems and so on—that we can then trigger and control in real-time. We’ve used these tools and approaches to create interactive installations, and now we will also use them during Four Tet’s live performance,” they explain. “It’s a kind of re-interpretation of what can be done with stage lighting—we are augmenting the traditional setup with over 4,000 individually controllable points of light suspended in space.”
