VICE Sports World News Roundup: September 4

Start your day with VICE Sports. Here's our morning roundup of the sports news from around the world.

Good morning, America. Welcome to the VICE Sports World News Roundup. Be sure to stop by daily for your morning headlines.

It's the 4th of September, 2015, and Sepp Blatter is still president of FIFA.

Iceland did it! It went to the Netherlands and squeaked out a 1-0 victory. I don't want to jinx things, but with Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey (which could prove difficult) left to play, the team is in a great position to qualify for its first major tournament. In Group A, Iceland is now 10 points above the Netherlands and two above the Czech Republic, which still has to play Turkey and the Netherlands.

Elsewhere in Euro Qualifying, Wales beat Cyprus 1-0 to remain top of Group B. (Wales, by the way, is now ranked higher than England for the first time ever.) Belgium is three points back, having beaten Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1. Italy and Croatia, meanwhile, are joint top of Group H.

In Italy's Serie B, referees will soon use a green card for rewarding good sportsmanship and "acts of virtue" on the field.

Multiple sources in Chile are reporting Arturo Vidal has been kicked off Chile's national team for getting incredibly drunk one night and missing training the following day (Links in Spanish). Remember, Vidal was involved in a drunk driving incident during the Copa America, but team management gave him a second chance. Vidal says he left the team to be with his young son, who is scheduled to have an operation today.

The usual suspects won at the U.S. Open yesterday, with the exception of No. 4 seed Caroline Wozniacki, who was beaten by world No. 149 Petra Cetkovska, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1).

American Jack Sock, meanwhile, basically passed out on the court, was helped off, and forced to retire. I guess it was hot.

Sometimes athletes make funny faces. Hell, sometime I make funny faces when I'm looking for the photo of the day. Here's Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic making a funny face as she returned serve yesterday. Kvitova beat American Nicole Gibbs 6-3, 6-4.
