Washington, D.C. house and techno duo, Protect-U, has partnered up with local imprint 1432 R for the Messix EP, debuting a new moniker Ocobaya in the process. We're excited to share the title track on THUMP today, which finds Aaron Leitko and Mike Petillo pairing a discomfortingly isolated techno kick with a harmonically crystalline, meditative atmosphere. The result is more disarming than it is enchanting, though, trading in new age impulses for greyscale blankness.

Leitko spoke to THUMP about the track via email. "The tracks on this EP were made at a time when we were trying to get into a more relaxed studio workflow," he said. "We wanted to make decisions faster and stay out of one another's way. So, on 'Messix' I set up some randomized patterns and loops and then tried to read [French science fiction comic] The Incal for ten minutes while things played out. Mike added keys."

1432 R was an early proponent of Ethiopian producer Mikael Seifu, who debuted on NYC imprint RVNG INTL. earlier this year with the wonderful Zelalem LP. Last year, D.C. label Future Times uploaded their highly sought-after discography to Bandcamp and commemorated the occasion with a free compilation, which Protect-U featured on.

Messix will be out on July 5 on 1432 R, and is available for pre-order.
