MIXED BY Kove

Kindey-shaking drum & bass paired with futuristic garage, plus a chat with the 22-year-old producer.

Watching re-runs of the British show Skins makes me feel some kind of way. Mostly I get jealous, wishing I had been invited to warehouse raves when I was still a bright-eyed, hopelessly romantic 16-year-old. And listening to Kove's sugar-sweet rave anthems, I am brought back to those Skins party scenes, where it feels like the weekend could last for eternity and everyone is momentarily invincible. That kind of euphoria is hard to come by.

Kove is one of the UK's most exciting newcomers, with a sparse but incredibly dynamic discography that carries him through polished drum & bass and house music variations. Taking cues from stars like Brookes Brothers, Culture Shock, Sub Focus and Chase & Status, he tells us, his music is made for "when you're on the motorway at 2AM"—though he doesn't condone speeding.

With a distinctly British palette that marries pop songwriting with massive sub bass and flying breakbeats, the 22-year-old has been carrying the sounds of the hardcore continuum to prime time radio. "D&B is such 'full' music, whereas house can really let the space breathe," he says of his two musical romances. "Regardless though, they've both still got to smash the floor!"

His track "Searching" appeared in just about every drum & bass mix that came out in the last few months of 2013. "I spent so long on the tune that I absolutely loathed it by the time it came out, but the response it got was overwhelming!" More recently, his single "Love For You" has been a peak time piano house hit since it came out six months ago. Today's mix takes us through the rave spectrum: "I really just wanted to it to encapsulate what one of my live sets is like," he says, "so there's a bit of everything thrown in there."

Opening with kidney-shaking drum & bass, dipping into big trap tunes and futuristic garage, then pulling back out at 170 beats per minute, the mix is a nice barometer of what's going big with the youth over on the British Isles. And when the hip kids in London are dancing to it, you can be sure we'll be hearing about it on American radio waves soon enough.

Kove's new single, "Way We Are," is out on June 9 on MTA Records. Listen up and check the tracklist for today's mix below:
