One of the last creator profiles to be unveiled for Year One is Stefan Sagmeister, a graphic designer and typographer based in New York whose methods of design focus as much on the human, organic aspect as the abstractions of pure design. In a talk he gave for TED—the global ideas conference—he talks about the value of the year-long sabbaticals he takes. The logic goes that if we spend years 0-25 of our lives learning, we spend the next 40 working until we retire at 65. What he does is take 5 years off his retirement, and encourages his employees to do the same, and every seven years takes a year out. The whole company is closed while he goes and becomes enriched by the exotic climes and culture of places like Southeast Asia. You may think: what a slacker. But the time off allows for a period of reflection and absorption of new and innovative ideas which will then reinvigorate him, stopping him from hitting a creative plateau. It’s basically a great reason to take a gap year, so tell that to anyone who calls you a bum.Inspired by his interesting and thought-provoking talk, which you can watch below, Matt Daniel from film production company Thinklab packed up and took off to soak up the floating cities, rolling hills, misty landscapes, and sloth-lined trees of South America, Europe, and New Zealand. The beautiful video above, Wanderlust is the end result. Music is “Infra 1” by Max Richter.Check back next week for Stefan Sagmeister’s full profile.[via Brain Pickings]
