If Only Every Monday Could Be Auckland Laneway Day

Auckland Laneway through the lens of photographer Jun Iwasaki.

Now in its eighth year, the New Zealand leg of Laneway arrived on a typically hot and sweaty Auckland Anniversary Day, and for the 12,000-strong crowd that headed out to its new venue in Albert Park, it would seemingly be just what everyone needed to get away from the reality of the outside world.

Well, just about. Swedish hardcore punks Refused, who were visiting for the first time in their 25-plus year history, reminded us that music shouldn't be seen as paid entertainment but a rebellion in and of itself. That wake-up call would be a mid-afternoon highlight, but sets from the likes of British R&B newcomer Nao, future rap star Mick Jenkins, and New Zealand's very own Purple Pilgrims, Yukon Era and Fazerdaze gave them plenty of competition. All up, it went off with barely a hitch, an impressive feat considering the teething issues that usually come with moving to a new site. Let's do it again next year, eh?
