Facebook has become such a regular part of our internet experience that we no longer consider how odd our interactions on the social network are compared to life preceding it. When did “liking” something become different than just liking it? Who has ever “unfriended” someone in real life? And when did a relationship start living and dying based on an official public status? German artist Nicolas Ritter uses staged photographs to make us think about this major part of our lives online.

In each photograph in The Social Network series, models are engaged in interpretive poses, surrounded by Facebook’s iconic blue and white. There’s a level of melodramatic charm in the unrestrained, pristine detailing of each image, reflecting our emotional investment in something that’s supposed to enhance social enjoyment.
