Are you an artist longing to succeed in the information minefield that is the internet? If you answered yes to this question, then you might want to take a few minutes out of your day and watch this “How To” video from Jaakko Pallasvuo. It forms part of a series of satirical instructional videos for artists called Paths To Success In The International Art World that includes such gems as How To/Location, How To/Orientation, How To/Craft and this latest one, the hilarious How To/Internet.Explaining what it takes to get ahead on the web, it’s set to downtempo, midi versions of TLC’s “Waterfalls” and the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” and features such gems of carefully considered words of wisdom as “How to stand out in an endless stream of information? Binge on 90s pop culture and HTML5” and “Keep a door to irony open at all times. When challenged, back out through it”—it’s the sort of advice you’ll be treasuring for the rest of your long-lived stint on the international art stage. If you’re still not sold, it also features the head exploding scene from Scanners. And who said there was no such thing as art criticism on the web? Pallasvuo’s videos come across as both products of and foils to the net art culture he criticizes. It’s clear this artist has spent many a night surfing obscure Tumblrs or Dump.fm, and many of the artists this work criticizes are probably his friends. Still, instead of buying into the insider culture being forged by his compatriots, he is able to analyze and dissect the components currently driving the machine, many of which will no doubt ring a little too true and incite more than a few cringes (and chuckles) from those who are part of or following this growing internet subculture.Have a watch, follow his methods and sit back and wait for the cult following to accrue.
