A scene from a Heaven's Gate introductory video utilizing some …err… futuristic video effects.Fifteen years ago today, all hell broke loose when UFO fanatic and cult leader Marshall Applewhite and thirty-nine of his followers committed mass suicide in search of a better world. Timing the suicides with the close passing of the large Hale-Bopp comet was crucial, as each member of Heaven's Gate believed that after they left their physical bodies (also known as "vehicles") their souls would board the comet-trailing mothership. If all went as planned, Applewhite and crew are currently out there, where no man has gone before. Assuming the ship is equipped with a decent tape deck, here are a few songs they might be celebrating with as you read this.Styx - "Come Sail Away"This song speaks for itself, and would probably have been best cued by Applewhite himself as Earth faded to a distant speck (yeah, yeah, you've heard the song a million times but you have to admit that it's almost too perfect of a fit).Dr. Octagon - "Earth People""Astronauts get played…tough like a ukulele". Not sure how THESE astronauts would get played, and not certain if a comparison to the durability of said ukulele helps their case. The National - "Looking For Astronauts"They'd be like "WTF, new music?? Didn't we blast off in 1997?"The Carpenters - "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"They'd hear this one and be all "that's us!"Hum - "Stars""She thinks she missed the train to Mars…" (Crew laughs. YES. SHE. DID.).The Animals - "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place""We've gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing we ever do". Yeah you do, and yeah it was.The Beatles - "Across The Universe""Nothing's gonna change my world" …the last track played as they remember their home, from far, far away. With all that said, what songs would you put on a mix for the crew?Previously - Vinyl Must Prevail! If you live in New York, you can go bother Jeff at Black Gold Records in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
