Robert Henke Performance "Lumière" Was A Sensory Thrill Ride

Henke performed his audio-visual experimental live show, followed by a performance by The Haxan Cloak.

This past weekend, computer music composer and all-around experimental artist, Robert Henke, appeared at Brooklyn's Masonic Temple with fellow boundary-pushing electronic experimenter The Haxan Cloakto perform his (Henke's) laser light performance piece titled Lumière. Part of the Red Bull Music Academy festival spanning the month of May, the showused high power lasers to draw geometric forms and points in space as the musicians unleashed a deluge of sound upon the audience.

Lumière incorporates self-written software Henke created to find "previously unseen beauty and minimalistic elegance in a commonly underrated medium," according to the maestro. The lasers used an advanced vector engine to make floating shapes, images, and words, promoting what the artist describes as "archaic sign language of an alien culture, communicating via emerging and disappearing traces of extremely bright light." In the installation's original form, the light system also controlled the performance's sound, creating an immersive audio-visual experience for those who like to dip their toes into an engulfing sea of sensory stimuli.

In a review of the Brooklyn performance, Andrew Parks at Self-Titled Magaptly noted, "If you let yourself get swept up in [Henke's] claustrophobic fusion of deceptively minimal visuals…the stateside debut of [The Haxon Cloak's] live show was a fitting foil to Henke's, a thrill ride that could have veered off the rails at any given moment." Not unlike a roller coaster ride, this audio-visual spectacle was enough to satisfy any adrenaline junkie.
