All the Other 'Classic' New Zealand TV Scenes That Deserve a Jimmy Kimmel Makeover

Our rich television history offers much more than "please tell me that is not your penis".

You can spend 25 years not giving a shit about a television show then all of a sudden, eight words change everything you've ever thought about it. I've never been the biggest Shortland Street fan but the Harry Warner "please tell me that is not your penis" scene ranks right up there with New Zealand television's best—or at least the most-memed—and it was only a matter of time until the rest of the world recognised this.

Jimmy Kimmel re-enacting the scene word-for-word as a comedy isn't exactly a compliment to the Shorty writers but whether it was intended to be funny or not, it's given our longest-running soap and it's longest-serving cast member their 15 minutes on the word scale. Michael Galvin aka Chris Warner, is played by perhaps the most famous impersonator in the world right now, Alec Baldwin.

Here's six other classic New Zealand TV moments that Jimmy Kimmel may have missed, but should definitely look into.

Wheel Of Fortune

David Tua makes the most famous spelling mistake in New Zealand history. To this day I don't think anyone has had the guts to correct him on it.
Casting: Manny from Modern Family as Tua

Gloss

The overacting in this 80s publishing office is almost as offensive as the potential harassment suit "Giles" might have on his hands. The dramatic organ at 1:43 makes me realise just how underused the instrument is these days.
Casting: The five most annoying people who took drama at your high school, and got jobs before you did.

Son Of A Gunn Show

Nothing we haven't seen before but when you search this on Youtube, there's only one clip of it, the rest are mainly MMA fights where someone's eye literally pops out. Here's the full scene at NZ on Screen.
Casting: Akil Mitchell from the NZ Breakers who did this in real life on the court a couple of months back.

Our First Home NZ

I feel bad finding this the funniest thing ever and so should everyone else. Like Shortland Street today, this did the rounds on comedy shows around the world. The worst thing you can do when you fall over is get up straight away and pretend it didn't happen. Robyn lives and dies by this (Note: She didn't die after this).
Casting: Lily from Big Save Furniture

Police Ten 7

This police officer knows heaps about pie temperature. It's almost like he's been waiting his whole career to arrest someone who was on their way to get a pie just so he could say this.
Casting: He does it so well that getting an actual actor to play him would be a travesty.
