Jaw-Dropping Cathedral Made From 55,000 LEDs

After Alain de Botton’s proposal of a minimalist black tower as a temple for atheists, it’s probably best that he doesn’t try to compete with Belgium’s Luminarie De Cagna, featured at Ghent Light Festival held in the Belgium city from January 26-29th. A colonnade is transformed into a cathedral of light using 55,000 LEDs with Romanesque and Renaissance architecture-inspired arches and an entrance that’s 28 meters high. And if you’re thinking this magical fairyland of wonder is a waste of electricity, it only consumes 20Kwatt/h.

With new technologies and creative thinking, artists can really amp up the awe factor when using light as a medium, like the light festival held in Durham, England last year, UVA’s alien-looking neon cube (which toured our events in 2011), and Bruce Munro’s Field of Light to name just three.
