There was a time when producing a music video required lots of money and the backing of a record label. At least, to produce something to a professional standard, anyway. That time was a while ago though, long before digital cameras and dissemination via the web. Of course, now you can make a stunning abstract music video using a video game peripheral. A few weeks ago, Dan Nixon did so for Echo Lake's single "Young Silence", using a hacked Kinect to imitate the style of Radiohead’s “House of Cards” video. Now, similar in aesthetic is a video from Moullinex which again uses a Kinect along with Processing, Cinema 4D, and After Effects to create the above video for their single “Catalina”. The result looks like Impressionist digital sketching, with the band’s virtually mapped half-forms floating in and out of the visuals, intercut with the narrative of a man walking along and dancing in the rain. Beautiful stuff, and made using off-the-shelf equipment and open source software. For a full walk-through of how they did it, go read their Tumblr here. If the year continues like this, 2011 may well be remembered, among other things, as the year of the DIY Kinect music video.
