Kill the Engine

Toughest Cardigan Ever

Since it's Monday and you're trying to avoid doing your work, maybe I could help kill a few minutes of your day by telling you a little bit about the screen printing party at Industry Print Shop.

A few weekends ago I participated in a fun screen printing party at Industry Print Shop here in Austin, TX. And I thought that since it's Monday and you're trying to avoid doing your work, maybe I could help kill a few minutes of your day by telling you a little bit about it. If you don't have a few minutes to spare then go back to playing whatever video game it is that you were playing before checking this site. No hard feelings.

So here's basically what the Print Addiction is: Tony (the guy who owns Industry) throws these print parties where he invites an artist(s) to submit 8 designs that can be set up on Industry's 8 station t-shirt printing wheel. The artists are also encouraged to hang up some of their work if they give a care. Then a bunch of people show up and drink free beer and buy t-shirts. After you buy a t-shirt, you can go over to the printing wheel and get any combination of the designs printed on your garment. You can also bring your own t-shirt, sweatshirt, blanket, etc. and have the designs printed on them for a lesser charge. The image above shows the eight designs that I submitted for the print party.

After sending my designs over to the dudes at Industry, I got in my car and made it drive over to their warehouse.

They have a private skateboard training facility on site. Just my style.

All the screens were burnt and ready to go.

Mix some ink and let's do this thang. (Insert poop colored joke here.)

My buddy Josh Row is interning at Industry right now. He pulled the first shirt. I'm a big fan of the aesthetic of screen printing and I love watching the process, but actually participating in the process… not so much. I love the results but I really don't like pulling those squeegees myself. What's that called? Oh yeah, being a big lazy baby man.

Print one of each and put them up on the wall so folks can see what there is to choose from.

Similar to buying cheap beer, there were plenty of bad choices to choose from.

I also hung some of my prints up. More of the same old crap.

Austin Beer Works sponsored the event and made sure that everybody's red cups were full for the first couple of hours. Thanks, guys. I love their branding.

This dude turned a regular old cardigan into probably the toughest cardigan ever. Or at least the toughest cardigan of 2012. So far.

I wasn't able to take many photos during the party (except the deer reaper cardigan) because my son just learned how to walk and I spent the whole party chasing him around making sure he didn't eat any ink or fall down any stairs. I'm sure he'll return the favor when I'm in my forties. But rest assured lots of people showed up and it looked probably just like an art party in your city. Unless you live in NYC. In which case the hair cuts at this party were totally sub-par.

To me, the raddest thing about the whole evening was that people were able to see first hand how a t-shirt is printed. Almost everybody owns at least one screen printed t-shirt, but many people have never seen the process. I think that kind of thing is important, because I'm a nerd.

Movie Review: The Search for Animal Chin

A ragtag group of skateboard men search the Continental United States (and Hawaii) for an elderly Chinese man. They never find him, but they learn a very important lesson along the way. That if you're looking for an elderly Chinese man who has gone missing, you should try your best to have fun while you're searching for him. Because chances are he's already dead.

Next Week: Okay Mountain in Chattanooga, and First Blood.
