I Guess Car Seat Headrest Have Made Me Love Smash Mouth Now

Fine, Will Todelo didn’t cover “All Star” but his reimagining of Smash Mouth’s “Fallen Horses” goes in.

Last Friday (16 February), Will Toledo's Car Seat Headrest released a re-recording of the project's 2011 album Twin Fantasy. In a celebration of that, and of the great tradition of rock music in general, he's issued an important cover version. Will Toledo has covered Smash Mouth.

Sadly, we didn't get the "All Star" reimagining that you were probably hoping for once you'd arrived at the end of that sentence. Instead, Toledo and co. went for a deep cut – "Fallen Horses" from 1999's Astro Lounge – and now I love Smash Mouth.

If you're not familiar, the original is pretty toned down compared to what you might be used to from the 'Mouth. Toledo transforms it even further into a pretty guitar musing, with that Cobain-lite scratch in his voice vying for attention on the chorus. It follows Smash Mouth's own Car Seat cover (they gave a version of "Something Soon" last week, on Jenny Eliscu's Sirius XMU radio show), and honestly this is the type of wholesome mutual appreciation I can get on board with.
