Virgin Galactic today broke the sound barrier in its first rocket flight test of its SpaceShipTwo, and now the private spaceflight company has released the video above. By all accounts it was a successful flight, but it doesn't really strike home until you actually see the craft fly. We're used to thinking of space involving giant rockets and space shuttles (RIP), and to see such a wild-looking craft drop off of its mothership and rocket off into the distance is like the future smacking you in the face. It's the stuff of sci-fi, but now it's more real than ever.Update: For some reason Virgin Galactic deleted the old video and reuploaded the footage above, which is mirrored (ship flying to the left, rather than the right). No idea why, aside from the guess that somehow someone uploaded a flipped video.@derektmead
