What We Saw and Learned from ‘Eden’

Mia-Hansen-Løve draws on a combination of real life experiences and dramatic side steps in her “rave age” film.

When it comes to dance music, the dynamic French community has often (if not always) had an upper hand. Eden, the latest offering from Mia-Hansen-Løve (Goodbye First Love) gives a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a DJ in the '90s. Yes there is the live party element and the passion of "making it" as a credible artist is documented, but this film deals with more of the personal side of the job and strife associated with the industry.

The main protagonist is Paul (Félix de Givry) who's seen grinding within the Parisian club scene—a sight that is not always pretty. Throughout the film, Paul stumbles through a medley of late night antics, business deals and sexually-charged moments. The film was also inspired by the experiences of Mia's own DJ brother (Sven Løve) who co-wrote the screenplay.

The story unravels between 1992 and 2013 and sees Paul forming his own duo dubbed "Cheers," of which continually moves through the Paris ranks and beyond. A series of interesting female characters also circle in and out of Paul's life, with Louise (Pauline Etienne) being a mainstay.

So what did we takeaway from Eden?

1. Even Daft Punk has trouble getting into clubs until they are recognized as Daft Punk. Don't expect to see their robot schticks. Do expect to hear "One More Time."

2. Money is a constant concern and banking the coin happens in conjunction with losing it.

3. Hookup culture isn't a new phenomenon; everyone can relate to a memorable walk of shame (or bed toss). Nothing good happens after 2 AM? Wrong.

4.Mother's aren't always too hot about having their kids become DJs.

5. The success (and mess) of "Cheers" is played out through a multitude of venues in cities such as Chicago, Paris and New York.

6. Vinyl, record crates and scratch DJs are idled. Vinyl is the bible; it's the water to the masses. Too far?

7.House parties are awesome, especially when Daft Punk is front and centre. There should be more house parties. They should never stop.

8. "You'll be a writer, I'll be a DJ. We'll be rich." Ah, young love.

9.The birth of 'French Touch' sound is detailed.

10.Eden has a wicked soundtrack, comprised of 26 recordings from artist such as Jaydee, Frankie Knuckles, and of course, Daft Punk. Listen to it.

Eden made its world premiere this September at the Toronto International Film Festival. Key to note is the financing for Eden was particularly hard and after shopping the script around it was thanks to the assistance of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter (aka Daft Punk), who offered up their music at a minimal fee, allowing Eden to receive a proper platform.

Eden is a film not about the ones that make it big, but those that continue to try and get to that status spot with most DJs sticking within the revolving door of DJ drama and house music.

Listen to the soundtrack in full.
