Kara Walker's Domino Sugar Installation Lives On Thanks To Streetview

Though Creative Time and Kara Walker's (literally and figuratively) massive exhibition A Subtlety is closed, the public can now explore the sugar-filled installation in an online, interactive recreation of the Domino Sugar space. Starting today, the 75-foot-tall Sphinx can be examined from all angles, in all her candied excellence.

In early June, The Google Art Project approached Creative Time about documenting the public art installation before the factory gets demolished early next year. Subsequently, the company's sent its Streetview robots to roam the defunct Williamsburg refinery and preserve it in its entirety. Check out the interactive, online space here.

Says Creative Time:

"We granted their Streetview team exclusive off-hours access to Domino (picture here), and are excited to finally share the results with the public—an immersive experience of Kara Walker's installation in the awe-inspiring space of the abandoned refinery, preserved in perpetuity."

See some stills from the Streetview-ified installation below. Though the scale of A Subtlety may not be as jaw-dropping in an online gallery, at least there's no scent of sun-scorched sugar sculptures.
