Notes On A Toy Car Superhighway: Supermarché, and Chris Burden's "Metropolis II"

The World Wide Web is currently buzzing with Supermarché's Vimeo reissue of their 2011 documentary on Chris Burden's toy car mega-sculpture, Metropolis II. The video, reposted below, documents the end of the sculpture's production, as Burden makes his final touches on the toy car superhighway, and muses on his creation.

Supermarché, who we previously covered in a documentary, surround the piece with an ambient video meditation on toy cars as the vehicles of the future, a pairing of form and function that perfectly illustrates our innately human drive towards inevitably driverless destinies.

Metropolis II is currently on view at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
