Bethesda Already Ported ‘Skyrim’ To New-Gen Consoles, But You Can’t Have It

At least, not right now. But come on, surely, guys, seriously: give us 'Skyrim' on our fancy new systems, please?

Look, here's a screenshot from 'Skyrim' on the Xbox 360. Wouldn't it be so much lusher on Xbone, though?

Just a quick one. Remember The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? Came out in late 2011, and immediately became pretty much the greatest role-playing game of the previous console generation (by which I'm talking about the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but obviously you didn't play said game on the latter machine because you're not an idiot). What with the rash of older games getting makeovers for the Xbox One and PS4 – looking at you, Tomb Raider, Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto V, we could be here all day – you'd think a port of Skyrim for today's top-of-the-table consoles would be a total no-brainer for developers/publishers Bethesda. An immediate money-maker. An easy win. A competition-levelling thu'um from the deepest of throats. But it never came.

But it did get made. It's out there. Well, in there, where you can't see it.


Game Informer today reports that Bethesda converted Skyrim to the Xbox One in order to get used to the new hardware at hand, ahead of going hell for leather on the imminently available Fallout 4. The American games magazine interviewed Fallout 4's executive producer Todd Howard for its current issue, who told them:

"The first thing we did was port Skyrim to Xbox One." But in terms of ever seeing said version in the wild, he quickly added: "Don't get your hopes up yet."

Too late, Todd, you bastard massive tease, you. Just do it, Bethesda. Do it. We dare you. We double dare you. Go on. Go on.

Fallout 4 is released on November 10th, but you already knew that. We'll be running our VICE Gaming verdict on it just as soon as enough hours have been logged.
