Three of the four women who were killed along with Ruben Espinosa were assaulted before being shot in the head. Loved ones identified them as friends ranging in ages from 18 to 32, and one 40-year-old house cleaner.
Ruben Espinosa was found on Friday night bound, beaten, and shot, along with four women in a Mexico City apartment. "There is no justice for a single murdered colleague," he said weeks ago of 13 others killed since Javier Duarte became governor.
"It's for your own good," said Gov. Javier Duarte of Veracruz, where 12 journalists have been killed since he took office. Six have been killed in Mexico so far this year, a tally on track to double from 2014.
More than 100 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000, and 2015 started with two confirmed press killings. Veracruz, where journalist Moises Sanchez Cerezo was kidnapped on Friday, is considered the most dangerous state to be a reporter.
Journalists gathered in solidarity in Mexico City for an auction to raise funds for the widow of “Goyo” Jiménez, who was killed in February.
