The Nigerian militant group is the latest of at least 31 groups who have reportedly pledged support to the Islamic State since August. And their pledge has apparently been warmly received.
Abdelmalek Gouri was the head of Jund al Khilafah or Soldiers of the Caliphate, an al Qaeda splinter group which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State before abducting and beheading the 55-year-old tourist.
The gruesome incident occurred just one week after Tunisia held the first presidential elections since the 2011 popular uprising that touched off the Arab Spring.
Jund al-Khalifah said they would kill Hervé Gourdel if France did not halt actions against the Islamic State. Now they seem to have carried out their threat.
