Photos of People Losing Their Shit in a Haunted House

Capturing the full-throated terror at a derelict psychiatric hospital, especially for Halloween.

This post originally appeared on VICE Australia

Kingseat is a derelict former psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand with fingernail scratches on the walls and (yeah, according to the legend) the ghost of an evil nurse who killed herself on site.

A few years back the nurse's residence part of the hospital was turned into a haunted house attraction called Spookers. Staff have reported seeing people leap into the pond without a splash. One worker chased after what they thought was a customer running through the attraction the wrong way, until they vanished into thin air.

Mikayla Morgan has been working at Spookers for the past eight months and the eerie feeling of being there is only just starting to taper off. Even so, if she finds herself in a part of it with no one around she'll "drop everything and find civilization."

"Sometimes out of the corner of my eye I think someone's watching me then I move my head and nothing's there. I've popped out to scare customers, and no-one's even there," says Mikayla.

Mostly, though, it's the terrified customers she has to worry about. When we visited, Mikayla got a real shiner from being kicked in the head when she scared a customer from under a table. "His reflex was to kick and run. I didn't see him. I just saw legs and foot. I know it was a male from the scream he made."

This Halloween, we went out to capture the terror-filled moment of abandonment that comes with losing your shit.
