Stream Nire’s Vigorous Remix of Princess Nokia’s “Tomboy”

“I wanted to bring [it] to a mystical, riot girrrl rave in the forest.”

DJ and producer Nire has put her own unique spin on fellow New York native Princess Nokia's "Tomboy." After opening on the singer and rapper's European tour, she felt inspired to remix the song due to its aggressively body-positive message.

Pairing ominous, sweeping synths with meditative running water sounds and bird chirps, the producer transforms "Tomboy" into a surreal sonic experience. Casually throwing in a sample from Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness," Nire plunges the song into a dark underworld that pulsates with infectious force.

"I love that 'Tomboy' is so body positive," Nire told THUMP via email. "It's aggressive self-love and aggressive rejection of beauty norms that we are inundated by. Seeing women of all shapes and backgrounds unapologetically own qualities that they've been told were 'flawed' is revolutionary, beautiful, and not easy. We are surrounded by advertising more than ever. It's brain-washing, it's set up to make you feel that you lack.

"Princess Nokia and I are both native New Yorkers, we grow up faster and are exposed to so many cultures, music, and art scenes. I always mix styles of music [because of my] life-long resistance to feeling confined. With the remix, I played with the natural sounds like the water droplets and made melodies with the bird chirps. I wanted to bring Tomboy to a mystical, riot grrrl rave in the forest."
