Chugga and the Fuckheads Care Little for Subtly or Decorum

Ahead of their tape launch at the third annual Shit Fest, take a listen to a new track from the Melbourne punks and read a short interview with Chugga himself.

There are some things about Chugga and the Fuckheads that are pretty obvious from the get go. They’re not massive fans of subtly or decorum. They struggle with anything that is not set to maximum volume and they have little interest in anything besides drunken rock and roll. Of course, this all sets them up for the potential of being a good punk band.

The Melbourne band, (Chugga is actually from Adelaide but moved east a few years ago) have built a solid following on the local pub scene with a style of music that is best described as loose and aggressive.

This Australia Day they launch their new tape in Melbourne as part of Shit Fest III, a punk rock festival that includes Bits of Shit, The Vacant Lot, The Living Eyes and Chook Race.

The tape contains the track “Smiling Politely” which features, thumping drums, a keyboard and Chugga snarling and swearing about a whole lot of stuff including pen licences.

Listen to the track below and read a chat we had with the man himself.

Noisey: Do you swear as much in real life as you do in your songs?
Chugga: Well, I am quite the eloquent fucking gentleman

You don't so much sing as snarl. It reminds me of the 86 tram. Do you have any good recent tram stories?
I'm guessing your not talking about the sound of the trams brakes screeching. But yeah I always enjoy the ride on the last tram home on the weekend. There ain't too many faculties left on that run. A rolling montage of inebriated entertainers. Like the gentleman who informed me that he magically grew a pacemaker and his favourite religion is Formula One car racing. He likes being able to see his Gods live on TV. You can't argue with that logic.

Do the keys feature on many Fuckheads songs?
Yeah Billy 'The Fuckhead' Joel has a tinkle on all our tunes. And we can't have any Fuckheads looking useless on stage.

What do you miss most about your hometown Adelaide?
Hindley Street. Where the vomit stained sidewalks will lead you to a palace with anything you desire. The acceptance of filth is rarely rivaled. A toilet bowl in a teacup. Like partying in a pigsty. A real slice of life…A Fuckheads paradise.

Is the Melbourne music scene really as good as it likes to believe it is?
