Here's Gemini Club's New Song "Preacher"

Dear Bands Who Have Nothing To Say: Fuck off and let someone with a point get in the ring. Not you Gemini Club, you've got a point.

A few years ago I was talking to a band about their lyrics and the lead singer was like, "Eh, I don't really care about them: they're an afterthought." This immediately changed my opinion of that band and I haven't really messed with them since. Sorry buddy, but unless you're making a club banger, sometimes lyrics are half of where it's at. I don't want to sing along to some half-assed notions you scribbled on a napkin. What's up? You've got nothing to say? Well then fuck off and let someone with a point get in the ring.

Which brings us to Chicago's Gemini Club. They have a new song called "Preacher." Released in conjunction with Red Bull Sound Select, it's an unabashedly sparkly, synth-dappled, indie-pop anthem with a backstory: it's about a gay priest.

Singer Tom Gavin explains: "I grew up in the Catholic church and was impacted in a positive way by my many priests and was exposed to the social and actual power they wield. They baptize babies. They marry couples. They give last rites. They can actually erase sins.

"When my sister came out a few years ago, I could no longer support an institution that condemned her. It was a weird time. My father, who sat on the parish council and taught religious classes also left the church.

"When I started coming up with lyrics for "Preacher" I realized that 99% of congregations have no idea what a priest's private life is like. In public they stand as the most holy, but like many of us, in private there can be deviations in morality. But so what? My whole point was that same priest who may love a man can still guide and lead and uplift--it doesn't matter who he loves."
