PREMIERE: Starchild & the New Romantic - "Woman's Dress"

He's played guitar for Solange and Chairlift, but Starchild is also a solo artist in his own right and he calls his tunes "Champion Music for the Heartbroken.”

Last time we ran into Starchild he was up on stage playing guitar with Chairlift, the first time we glimpsed him he was shaking his hips and wielding his six stringer with Solange. (Turns out it was actually Chairlift's Patrick Wimberly who intro-ed Starchild to Solange, who Wimberly had connected with thanks to Chairlift's work with Beyoncé's "No Angel"). But anyway, somewhere between Solange and Chairlift we've become acquainted with him as Starchild & the New Romantic the solo artist. Born Bryndon Cook, down in Maryland, we first premiered his video for "Relax" back in 2013, and below is his latest song "Woman's Dress," lifted from his debut EP Crucial, out via Ghostly on March 18. Musically it's a lil' bit lo-fi R&B. A smidge Prince. A teenth Blood Orange (who is something of an encouraging mentor for Starchild). It's a lotta chill. Three cheers to the kid who taught himself guitar watching VH1 Classic.

"Woman's Dress came during the middle of the night," explains Starchild. "I was on winter break during my third year at SUNY Purchase, when Lord RAJA sent some of the production over. I immediately started writing a vocal / guitar part about a certain someone who shall remain nameless and my unrequited love for her. Like many songs on Crucial, it's a about dedication, obsession and an undying yearning to fulfill a destiny that doesn't belong to you in the first place."

Kinda explains why Starchild categorizes his output as “Champion Music for the Heartbroken.” Feel you Starchild. Feel. You.

Crucial is out on March 18 via Ghostly.
