Two Decades After "Doggystyle" Snoop’s Still Innovating

Snoop is evolving and playing NBA2k14.

It’s hard to know what we’re supposed to call Snoop; at the time of writing he’s been known as Snoopzilla, DJ Snoopadelic, and most recently, Snoop Lion. Whatever the name, nothing has taken the Dogg out of one of West Coast rap’s all-time greats—his landmark debut Doggystyle having just celebrated its 20th birthday, marking a historic two decade career that most recently brought us the Dam-Funk team-up 7 Days Of Funk.

Before the dee-oh-double-gee returns to Australia for Big Day Out and his Noisey presented sideshows, we thought we’d check in for some of his signature spiritual guidance to kick off 2014. It looks like it’s gonna be a big year for caps lock.

Noisey: Where does the desire to innovate come from at this stage in your career?

Snoop: MY DESIRE TO INNOVATE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME. I KEEP MAKING MUSIC THAT REFLECTS MY LIFE.

Realistically looking at Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion, DJ Snoopadelic, Snoopzilla it has got to be difficult adapting to all of these projects in a relatively short timeframe?

NO IT’S NOT DIFFICULT TO DO ALL THESE PROJECTS. I LOVE IT. I LOVE MUSIC.

In the past year you’ve worked with Diplo on Reincarnated and Dam-Funk on 7 Days Of Funk, coming up with two totally different styles, how did the recording processes differ?

I WENT DOWN TO JAMAICA WITH DIPLO [for Reincarnated]. FOR 7 DAYS OF FUNK, DAM AND I LINKED UP IN LA TO MAKE IT. IT’S CALLED 7 DAYS OF FUNK BECAUSE WE MADE IT IN 7 DAYS. IT WAS VERY NATURAL.

Listening to Doggystyle growing up was my gateway to the world of P-Funk. Do you feel like it’s your role to expose a new generation to that world, especially with a project like 7 Days Of Funk?

LOTS OF PEOPLE TELL ME THAT MY MUSIC HELPED THEM DISCOVER SOME OF THE CLASSICS, AND THAT’S AN HONOR. WE GREW UP TO THOSE SONGS SO IT’S THE LEAST WE COULD DO.

You’ve collaborated with everyone from Pac to Willie Nelson to Katy Perry to Girls Generation. Is there anyone else you want to collaborate with but haven’t yet?

SADE.

Of new GTA, FIFA, Madden and NBA2k14, what’s been taking up most of your time lately?

2K14! HELLO!

I was wondering when thinking about this interview, has vaping changed your smoking habits?

NO IT JUST ADDS TO MY GAME.

What’s more difficult when travelling the world, scoring good kush or scoring good munchies?

IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU’RE AT.

It’s been 20 years since Doggystyle, does it blow your mind how much things have changed since then. What’s stayed the same?

IT DOESN’T BLOW MY MIND HOW MUCH THINGS HAVE CHANGED. I FEEL BLESSED TO BE WHERE I’M AT THOUGH. MY LOVE FOR THE GAME HAS STAYED THE SAME THE WHOLE TIME.

Thank you Snoop, it’s an honour.

THANK YOU.
