I'm Crying Listening to Young Scooter's "Hector"

Having a grandfather named Hector certainly helps.

Young Scooter has been teasing “Hector” for a few weeks now and yesterday, the Chophouze-produced ode to the Atlanta rapper’s favorite narcotraficante arrived in full on DJServicePack.com. Scooter has been one of Atlanta’s most promising prospects since the release of his 2012 regional trap anthem “Colombia,” but a six-month prison stint last year certainly took its toll on his buzz. By the time Scooter was released last October, Atlanta was swarming with talent and now Scooter finds himself looking to regain his momentum.

“Hector” is essentially “Colombia 2.0,” which is a good thing for Scooter, who knows how to play to his strengths. It is completely unrealistic and over-the-top, with Scooter at one point rapping, “I see over every brick on the East coast.” The song’s cover art features the 2009 arrest of Héctor Huerta Ríos aka “La Burra” of Mexico’s Beltrán-Leyva Cartel, which is only slightly amusing (mostly it’s just in poor taste), considering that the recurring “Hector” character present in much of Scooter’s music is of Colombian descent. But let’s not get caught up in semantics, as Hectors are seemingly interchangeable in Young Scooter’s Alejandro Sosa-inspired world.

My own personal Hector is my Argentine grandmother’s longtime husband, who almost died last week after choking on a piece of white bread submerged in dulce de leche. Apparently he was without oxygen for several minutes, though luckily he doesn’t appear to have suffered any serious brain damage. My grandfather passed away when I was three, so Hector’s played a grandfather-esque role in my life since, despite the fact that he lives in Buenos Aires and I only see him and my grandmother once every couple of years. So this song couldn’t have come at a better time for me personally and I’ll be screaming “HECTOR HECTOR HECTOR HECTOR” with tears of joy through the weekend in celebration of this sweet, gentle 82-year-old guy living to fight another fight. This is surely not how Young Scooter intended for me to appreciate “Hector” when he recorded it but, hey, that’s the power of music. And besides, what’s the point of having family in South America if you can’t fantasize about them being the plug?
