Let Marco Rubio Listen to EDM in Peace

Marco Rubio, one of the Republicans who wants to be president of the United States of America, was teased on CNN last night about having never been to a rave. The interview was another face-off the presidential hopeful has had recently with the media about his musical tastes.

At the Republican town hall in South Carolina last night, veteran anchor and CNN poster boy Anderson Cooper probed Rubio about his interest in EDM.

Cooper told Rubio he'd been surprised to hear Rubio was into the musical genre, which Cooper clarified stands for "electronic dance music," to which Rubio said: "Maybe people thought it was something else."

Cooper then asked Rubio if he'd ever been to a rave, because, well, "That's what they do." The Florida senator, who looked a little flustered, said: "No, no, I've never been to a rave. It's the Republican primary!"

"I listen to it," Rubio continued. "I think I'm a little too old to be going to a rave." He thought about it a little more, then added, "I have the boots for it," lifting his leg up to show Anderson his pointy boot.

Rubio then composed himself and explained to Anderson what he's said before about EDM: namely, that he likes it because the "lyrics are clean" and he can listen to it in front of his kids. Plus, he added: "The beats are fun."

Reporters have been fascinated with Rubio's taste in music since he announced his presidential bid last April and walked off stage to Axwell's "Something New." The Swedish DJ later slapped Rubio's camp with a cease-and-desist for not obtaining permission to use the track in his campaign.

Reporters have since taken the every opportunity that comes their way to make fun of Rubio for liking EDM. To be fair, yes, it's hilarious. Marco Rubio doesn't exactly do himself any favors by sitting in a dad-sweater and telling a reporter that he's "really interested in EDM."

However, reporters need to stop beefing Rubio for liking EDM. There's nothing wrong with listening to EDM—or any form of electronic music for that matter—and not being into raves. Raves are loud and smelly and they happen late at night. Let the man listen to David Guetta in peace. As Rubio said himself, the beats are just fun.
