Olafur Eliasson to Launch Solar-Powered Phone Charger

The artist has launched a Kickstarter for Little Sun Charger, a way to charge your phone off grid and on the move.

A few years back Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson launched Little Sun, a solar powered LED lamp that merged artistic design practices with the practicalities required for bringing a renewable light source, designed for reading and studying, to countries where electricity is scarce. Today, Eliasson has launched a Kickstarter to fund a follow-up to Little Sun.

Like Little Sun, the Little Sun Charger is a collaboration between Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen. It will charge your cell phone, and a built-in LED lamp from the sun's energy, stored in solar panels, and only requires five hours of sun to charge a phone from its USB port.

The prototype has been built and the Kickstarter has been launched to get through the next stages—finalizing production, certification, sourcing components—to get the product ready for market to launch in March 2016. The Kickstarter is for $50,000, and if you pledge $55 or more you get a Little Sun Charger for your generosity.

"The sun’s energy is powerful enough to be available to every single one of us on earth in the form of clean and sustainable energy. Light is for everyone—it determines what we do and how we do it. Light and life are inseparable," Eliasson says on the Kickstarter page. "I have always considered light to be more than just something practical. Light touches our feelings. In my artworks I use light to shape spaces and environments that make people wonder, make them question how they sense the world and engage with it. I believe that art can change the world by making an issue as urgent as energy access not just understandable for the mind but also physically tangible. This experience can lead us to recognize our interconnectivity, what we have in common, and it moves us to act."
