Shannon Shaw Has a Terrifying Band of Giant Teddy Bears in Her New Video

Watch the surreal "Freddies 'n' Teddies" video from the Clams' frontwoman's debut solo project 'Shannon in Nashville,' out June 8.

Dang, Shannon Shaw sure has been keeping busy. In February, she and Bay Area heroes Shannon and The Clams released their fifth studio album, Onion, a heartbreaking collection of doo-wop melodies recorded in Nashville in tribute to victims of the Ghost Ship fire.

Nashville left an impression, and Shaw had more to say, leading to her teaming up with Onion producer Dan Auerbach towards her debut solo album, Shannon in Nashville (out June 8 via Easy Eye Sound). The LP, which nods to Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis, hones in on Shaw's old-school defiance and newfound vulnerability as she takes center stage behind a band of esteemed sessions musicians, whose resumes include the likes of Elvis, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Aretha Franklin, and Johnny Cash.

Today, Noisey is pleased to premiere the video for Shaw's track "Freddies 'n' Teddies." It's a slow-burning slice of pop noir, like a lost Nancy Sinatra recording cut after a night sleeping in Donna Summer's satin sheets.

"This song was probably the furthest from my wheelhouse and I’m so glad we did it. It’s kind of the ultimate example of the variety on this record," Shaw tells Noisey. "In Nashville it’s tons of experimenting, bits and nuggets of everything I love in music. I see this album as a whole like a quilt, not a solo record. Every musician including myself is a weird little patch and the threads making each patch is everyone’s different experiences, history, influences, taste.”

The song's Hannah Lew-directed video is just as cheeky and eclectic, featuring dark, saturated shots of Shaw lamenting a fickle lover and fronting a giant teddy bear-backed band.

“I think that there is no better backing band for me," Shaw says. "Seriously cannot think of one better idea than a full blown teddy bear band!"

Ain't no one loyal like a teddy bear. Watch the premiere of Shannon Shaw's "Freddies 'n' Teddies" video below, and preorder Shannon in Nashville here.
