Bitch Prefect on Life's Big Questions

Does wearing a suit mean you have to write songs about the Dow Jones?

Adelaide favourites Bitch Prefect have been pretty busy lately, somehow managing to balance growing up, making sound food choices and writing music. We have a lot of respect of anyone who can rock a suit (they all have legitimate day jobs now) and a crowd, so are pretty excited to have them playing the Noisey Mountain gig we’re putting on with Sugar Mountain for Melbourne Music Week. Straight Arrows, Raw Prawn and Aus Muteants will be joining them, along with lots of dancing and good times.
This gig is free, but you need to RSVP here to come. VICE: We noticed you guys tend to write less about life’s huge questions, and more about what you’re eating. Are you just building it all up for one massive heartfelt outpouring one day?
I think we wrote those songs at a time in Adelaide when going to the shops was just about the most interesting thing to happen on any day. Food is very important. That it is. Speaking of Adelaide, you’re proud local boys, what’s something that people in other states overlook about your hometown?
People are making good things happen there. There’re some really amazing DIY places like Format and Animal House that have set up their own shit and actively support the local artistic community. I like that, it’s like everybody is teaching themselves how to get shit done. And as a result they end up with amazing venues that don't answer to anybody and really reflect the music that’s being produced. Those places are the only hope. Scott, you’ve cut your band participation from six bands to one, do you ever miss all the action of spreading yourself that thin?
I wouldn't say I really ever spread myself thin. I use to have a lot (like fucking heaps) of time to spare. Filling that was definitely achieved by playing in a lot of bands, almost all of which didn't practice much. Perfection has never been high on my agenda. That said, I do miss collaborating with different groups of people. It's nice to have a reason to hang that doesn’t rely on getting wasted. I'm going to play in more bands soon. This time I think I will spread myself thin. You guys all have responsible second lives with jobs that require suits, are your songs going to start moving away from bad food decisions and into dry cleaner recommendations?
I think we have always sung about whatever is inside our heads at that specific point in time. It’s hardly poetic, but it's the way we roll. Given our new life direction, and lack of thought for lyrical content, I guess it's fair to assume that you'll probably be hearing a few more songs about the Dow Jones and going Diamond.

With all the goods bands floating around for Melbourne Music Week, we should probably ask, who are you guys listening to at the moment?
If I'm being honest, right now I’m listening to Holy Modal Rounders. There's a good chance any time I'm asked what I’m listening to, that will be the answer. However there are plenty of local bands that float my boat. Recently I've been lucky enough to hear snippets of the upcoming Beaches album, which is really great and very exciting. UV Race’s movie Autonomy and Deliberation has a killer soundtrack that I’ll be getting a copy of as soon as I can. It’ll be on repeat for a long time. I got to see Deaf Wish the other weekend, reigniting an old flame, which brings me to another of Jensen’s bands called Exhaustion. Fucking killer.
