Crate Expectations: Bambounou

Bambounou’s crate is full of the raw energy that propels his techno productions.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Bambounou.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?

What's the first song you remember hearing in a club?
Bambounou: Can't really remember the club but I remember the DJ playing this and loving it.

What song reminds you of your teenage years?
Slayer's "Altar of Sacrifice", I was just loving Slayer, but then Tom Araya's voice got deeper and I hated it. I liked when he could go very very high.

What's your worst guilty pleasure song?

What do you have on heavy rotation right now?
The new Kamasi Washington album, The Epic, is so good. When I'm listening to it everyday, I feel like I should learn to play an instrument. But then I remember there's just too many people more talented than me…

What song is moving dancefloors right now?
I heard this in Panorama Bar while Nick Hoppner was playing and I totally lost it. The groove is so on-point and the MIDI melody is really good.

Which of your own tracks do you like the most?

Which of your own tracks do you hate the most?
I don't hate any of my tracks but sometimes I wish they hadn't been released. My music got more refined with time through my experiences. When I listen to a track I did when I was younger, I just think that I must have found it very cool at the time. I'm cool with my past-self.

What song has best stood the test of time?
Pretty much everything Drexciya did. They were really a huge influence on me. Even though their stuff is not that old, they started doing music around the time I was born so it feels like an eternity for me.

Which song did you hate at first, but has grown on you over time?
At first, I didn't like the high-pitched voice but eventually I realized that this track is amazing and now I love everything they've done.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
The track I'm playing all the time at the end of my sets is "2 B Free" from DJ Deeon. Such a cool party tune.
