Sometime on or around October 15, someone crashed a Toyota Camry into a tree in Melbourne's Fitzroy North. The car sat there for the best part of two weeks. Nobody moved it. Lots of people Instagrammed it. But then, like a Christmas surprise, Melbourne awoke Monday morning to find the Camry had been painted gold.Seeing a piece of shitty suburban crime reimagined by the Midas touch is a beautiful thing. Your head doesn't understand, but your heart totally understands. Because there's this perfect symmetry between the colour gold and wasted 14-year-olds who jack bad cars and can't navigate simple roundabouts.

Which is why Melbourne's media is all over this story. When VICE arrived the car was surrounded by bloggers and news crews. They were all smiling and snapping furiously. They all got it. Even though no one knows whose Toyota Camry it is, who crashed it, or who painted it gold. At the same time, nobody knows how long the car will last. Because the City of Yarra might not get it.Check out more of Ben's photos on Instagram
