Post-Apocalyptic Angels Come to Life with 3D Projections

Gothic tableaux 'The Destiny of Man' becomes all too real through the magic of projection mapping.

Post-apocalyptic angels are brought to life in a modern day tableaux vivant through the magic of 3D projection. The contemporary gothic scene, a massive outdoor projection mapping undertaking, is called The Party is Over, and was recently printed onto a massive 30 x 43' piece of fabric. The piece was then draped over Urban Spree Gallery's outdoor, artist wall, facing in the direction of the congested Warschauer Strasse train station in Berlin. It’s but one of the images from photographer Gérard Rancinan and author Caroline Gaudriault’s new show at the Urban Spree, The Destiny of Men. Using digital remodeling software, the Berlin based artist studio RE: SORB, projected the complex 4K animations onto the canvas, activating Rancinan’s static scene. In the video preview below, you can see RE:SORB reshaping the backdrop, playing with lighting, and transforming the texture of the characters in three dimensions.

Gaudriault and Rancinan’s show proposes what the gallery calls, “a modern interpretation of the symbology of the angel.” After its first showing in Florence, The Destiny of Men headed to Urban Spree with hopes that the city might provide the geographic context needed to reveal a darker, more contemporary vision of the series.

Take a look at some pictures from the show below:

The Destiny of Man will be on display at Urban Spree through May 29, 2016. For more information on the show, you can head over to the gallery’s website here. Check out RE:SORB’s website here, and more work from Rancinan on his website.
