Problematic Australian film icon and NRL fan Russell Crowe is going through some shit. Specifically, an expensive divorce from his long term partner Danielle Spencer, which has forced him to part with some of his possessions in order to make a bit of quick cash. We’ve all been there between paydays. Although Crowe opted to use a Sotheby’s auction instead of Gumtree to offload the junk from his house. On Saturday night, he managed to make more than $3.7 million selling artwork, jewellery, and memorabilia from his acting career.

So what priceless treasures were people bidding on? The list is long and weird. A pair of red Doc Martens from Romper Stomper went for $10,000, purchased by the National Museum of Australia. The violin Crowe played in Master and Commander sold for $135,000. As a sales tactic Crowe enlisted an Australian Youth Orchestra musician to perform the film’s score for auction goers.

Costume pieces from Gladiator predictably went at a premium: the armour Crowe wore as Maximus sold for $125,000, and a replica chariot went for $65,000. Meanwhile a leather jockstrap from Cinderella Man was sold over the phone to one lucky bidder for a bargain $7,000. The brown leather hood he wore in Robin Hood? A steal, at $11,000.

Crowe is clearly a man of varied and discerning tastes. For some reason he owned the 1986 Grammy Award that was presented to Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Sam Phillips, Rick Nelson, and Chips Moman. That one went for $150,000. A mounted Mosasaur skull from the late Cretaceous period fetched $65,000. If these prices seem extravagant, consider that the lucky buyers were also subject to an extra 22 percent commission.

Crowe seems happy with how things went, tweeting that he expected total sales to climb towards the $4 million mark in coming days. Unfortunately, he has so far failed to find a buyer for a 2008 customised South Sydney Rabbitohs motorcycle. If you’re interested, contact details for Sotheby’s are here.
