Childish Gambino is Debuting New Music in New Zealand

It's an “immersive virtual reality, multi-sensory concert experience” being held near Auckland airport. What?

Culturally ubiquitous polymath Donald Glover has announced that he’ll bring his Pharos concert –– an “immersive virtual reality, multi-sensory concert experience,” according to Vanity Fair, whatever that means –– to New Zealand later this year. Pharos NZ, set to take place in late-November somewhere near Auckland airport, will be Glover’s second Pharos concert, following a debut at Joshua Tree in 2016. According to Fam Rothstein, one of Pharos’ organisers along with Glover, “People can expect new music in some capacity.”

“Pharos is meant to be a communal space––a place that evolves and reacts to the culture,” Glover told Vanity Fair. The last Pharos event included performances from Glover, art projections, and screenings of unreleased episodes of Atlanta, Glover’s TV show.

From the way Vanity Fair describes it, Pharos sounds like one of those classic Very Serious Events where they tell you to dress warmly and go to the bathroom before you leave the house and to not bring your phone. Let me tell you: those events always seem like heaps of fun, until you’re trapped in the middle of a field on an island outside Tasmania at 3AM in the morning watching elderly people hit rocks together. Sure, you can say it was a profound experience, but deep down in your heart you’ll know that you did a two hour boat ride and 15-minute walk for nothing.

For those who can’t wait until November for their Donald Glover fix, Atlanta’s second season starts this week, and he’ll be playing Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Solo movie, and he'll be the voice of Simba in the new Lion King. Really covering all bases, that guy.
