2014 Artists of the Year | No. 6 | Gorgon City

Chicago powerhouse vocalist Jennifer Hudson on the UK house duo: “refined freshness.”
THUMP is celebrating 2014 in tracks, albums, artists, events and moments with our first annual yearbook, #YRBK14. Our Artists of the Year include well-established acts alongside some exciting newcomers. Rather than tell you why these particular ten won the year, we asked a few of their fans to do it for us.

Before her Oscar and Grammy, Hudson worked at Burger King by day and sang in Chicago gay clubs like The Taste at night. She says she won competitions against drag queens because while they would lip sync, she would actually sing. And damn, can she sing.

On Gorgon City's "Go All Night" Hudson brings Chicago soul to an electrifying vocal collaboration and the UK's Gorgon City were ready to take it to the house. We asked the singer about the unexpected collaboration that caught dance music fans off guard and sent them straight to the floor.

Working with the Gorgon City boys has this refined freshness to it. It's exciting to work on something that's unexpected and really comes from an unprocessed perspective. It removes all pressure and lets us just jam on music that really makes you feel.

That's why I love these guys, because they are always about the music and, for me, that's when things really start to happen.

They have an incredibly bright future ahead of them and I'm looking forward to future collaborations!

Jennifer Hudson's recent album, JHUD is available now through RCA Records.
