Well Thank Fuck: We’re Getting Another Crocodile Dundee Sequel

In 1986 a relatively unknown comedian named Paul Hogan—who had earlier been a painter on the Sydney Harbour Bridge—starred in a film called Crocodile Dundee. That film went on to become the highest grossing Australian film in history, which is a record it still holds, and might explain why every decade or so it gets a remake. And that’s now happening again with Dundee: The Son of a Legend.

The film is set to star American actor Danny McBride, appearing as the son of Paul Hogan’s character sired in some other Dundee film. Those being 1986's Crocodile Dundee, 1988's Crocodile Dundee II and 2001’s intriguingly bad Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.

Anyway, here’s a teaser.

So as you just saw, the teaser brings us McBride standing on a cliff, dressed in various reptile skins and gazing at the outback. “That’s not a knife,” he tells the audience—of course—before unsheathing a big knife and waving it around. “This is a knife.” And then he starts cutting shapes in the air with his big knife. “Look at me, look at the knife.”

Based on this 38-second clip, McBride’s looks like he’ll be repurposing the character he trademarked in Pineapple Express, This Is The End, Eastbound & Down, and Vice Principals. That is, some American jerk who makes up for his stupidity with supreme confidence.

The teaser first appeared in PEOPLE magazine, with a brief comment from Paul Hogan. “Crocodile Dundee is a film that has stood the test of time,” Paul said. “It was a defining moment in my life and one of my proudest accomplishments. Throughout the past few years, I’ve been thinking about how to bring Dundee to a new generation.” He added that there’d be more news about the film very soon.

The Danny McBride version is due for release in June.
