There's an Illegal Trash Volcano Burning in Greece

For decades, the Greek Island of Kalymnos has been dealing with an active volcano... of trash.

The "volcano" of Kalymnos is not a geological phenomenon or a natural formation—it's an illegal dump on a picturesque Greek island where garbage is burned nearly every day.

This problem is not unique to Kalymnos. According to the latest data from the Ministry of the Environment, Greece has a total of 39 active illegal landfills, 21 of which are on the Greek islands.
The country has been fined millions of euros by the European Court, but the problem persists. When garbage and plastics are burned, as they are in Kalymnos, they release toxic substances into the air. These dumps are illegal because they harm the environment and public health.

VICE explores how this "volcano" of burning refuse has affected the lives of residents on one of Greece's most beautiful islands, and finds that the issue of garbage management in Greece is more complicated than it initially appears.
