A few years ago, I wanted to be ADULT. when I grew up. Maybe I still do. The Detroit duo of Adam Miller and Nicola Kuperus are simply that cool. Though some pegged them as an "electroclash" band, they've proved time and time again that they are above that tag, proudly wearing their synth fetishism, their amazing aesthetic sensibilities, and their influences (from Suicide to Einsturzende Neubaten) on their black sleeves.
Behold, the premiere of the new video for "Tonight We Fall," a track off their LP, The Way Things Fall, which came out on Ghostly International earlier this year. "Tonight We Fall" kind of sounds like a dark electro-pop version of The Cars if they liked to wear PVC pants and sit in fog-drenched basements throwing rose petals at each other and playing with knives.
Like most of ADULT.'s other visual output, they made this clip entirely themselves, from figuring out the spooky special effects to the styling to the backdrops; the whole thing is shot in their amazingly gothy historic house in Detroit that they renovated all themselves. The concept was inspired by a series of photographs Kuperus created a few years back after seeing Jean Cocteau's 1930 film The Blood of the Poet. Like most of Kuperus' work, the video has no post-production and all effects were created "in camera."
Check out this remix from John Foxx & The Maths and go see them on tour. It will make you feel like you are the coolest person you know, we swear. ADULT. forever!
