Tony Abbott Was Ridiculous Yesterday

The Onion-eater made a huge fuss during the marriage equality debate, then didn’t even stick around for the vote.

Tony Abbott feels like all of our problem, but actually his main job is to represent the people of Warringah. It’s an electorate in Sydney. Northern beaches. Very nice. Very Liberal. Very wealthy. And very in support of marriage equality: 75 percent of its same sex marriage survey respondents voted “Yes” in November.

Abbott, of course, voted “No”. Which is fine. But do you think he sucked it up and legislated on behalf of the people he is paid to represent (and has represented for 23 years), yesterday? Yesterday, one of the most historic in Australian parliamentary history? Absolutely not. Abbott did not vote in favour of the same sex marriage bill. Abbott was not even present when the voting took place—he abstained, alongside colleagues such as Barnaby Joyce and George Christensen.

That’s not to say his views weren’t heard in the House of Representatives earlier in the day. On the contrary, he made long and impassioned speeches about why the bill wasn’t good enough. Why it needed to be amended. Typically, he kept bringing up the Safe Schools programme, which has nothing to do with marriage equality.

The bill, by the way, had bipartisan support. It is very simple, very basic. It doesn’t force schoolboys to wear dresses, it doesn’t allow anyone to marry their labrador. It’s does allow all Australians enjoy the same basic legal rights.

And the people of Warringah know that. As do most other Australians.
