Auckland City Limits is New Zealand’s New Big Day of Music

The former New Zealand Big Day Out promoter is teaming up with Austin City Limits to bring some big name musical acts to Auckland next year.

Austin City Limits Music Festival and former Big Day Out New Zealand promoter Campbell Smith have teamed up to launch Auckland City Limits Music Festival; a New Zealand version of the long-running US event. Typically held over two consecutive long weekends, Austin City Limits has built a reputation for large and varied line-ups covering a range of genres.

Though Auckland City Limits isn't quite that big (yet), the event will still reportedly offer 40 bands over four different stages, including “major international artists”, and a line up curated specifically for Kiwi tastes.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald Smith described the Big Day Out as “an Australian tour [where] we were just the sixth show”. A lineup curated specifically to New Zeland tastes is one of the major goals of the new festival.

The event is to be held on March 19 in Auckland's inner-city parkland Western Springs; the same location that previously held the final Big Day Out. Past feedback on the venue has all been pretty positive, so it will be good to see the space being used once again.

Tickets will reportedly go for a pricey $200 (though $99 early bird tickets will be available), but if the artists are anything like Austin City Limits' headliners Foo Fighters, Drake and The Strokes then they probably won't have much trouble getting rid of them.
