Insult to Injury: Week Ending 7/4

Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to this week while kicking it at 285 aka the Noisey offices.

Here at the underground cave lair that siphons energy from the hopes and dreams of everyone who's ever been to 285 Kent that we call the Noisey offices, we have a slogan: If it's not American, eat shit. Or something. (We don't actually have a slogan other than "music is dope.") Anyways.

Yesterday, the kind people at Grenco Science sent us a whopping order of ten motherfucking G-Pens, so our productivity basically got stopped in its tracks at around 2pm today. Here's what we listened to as we sent sketchy text messages to our dealers.

Ricky Eat Acid - Sun Over Hills EP
Nominally an ambient dude, Ricky Eat Acid blew me away with the drop of his Sun Over Hills EP. It's the type of weird, blown-out dance record you could imagine Kanye West listening to, freaking the fuck out, and calling its producer in for a quick session in a studio inside of a dormant volcano. Or the soundtrack to a dance party in the basement of a house in Bed-Stuy. It's an everything-but-the-kitchen sink release, spanning wilting chiptune, post-everything footwork, whatever astral plane ambient music and DJ Screw might cohabitate upon peacefully, haphazardly assembled in a way that belies the love and care that surely must have gone in a project such as this.

"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" - Bruce Springsteen
The first real concert I ever went to was a Bruce Springsteen show with my dad, which, in addition to being sweet, is probably one of the most all-American things you can do. For most of high school, Bruce Springsteen was probably my favorite artist, in part because I didn't even really know what else was out there. Over the years, I moved on to a wider spectrum of stuff, but I think it's safe to say I didn't know how good I had it. Bruce is awesome. He is Bruce motherfucking Springsteen. And while I like huge, anthemic Bruce, it's clearly his quiet portraits that are the most stunning, that show what an unparalleled songwriter he is. It's Fourth of July weekend, so we have to talk about this song (it's also on our playlist of 1776 songs about America), and I want to talk about the details: the pinball wizards, the shirt that gets caught and tears in a Tilt-a-Whirl, the greasers who get busted for sleeping on the beach all night, the fact that the arcades aren't just arcades but dusty ones filled with "pleasure machines." You know that this song is full of mixed emotions long before the chorus comes into focus. America is a rich tapestry, and so is this song.

Zac Brown Band - "Chicken Fried"
It's America's birthday today. That means a few different things: hot dogs, blue jeans, the American flag, and motherfucking country music. In case you missed Andrew Winistorfer's essay about traveling to the middle of Wisconsin to attend Country USA earlier this week, you should revoke your citizenship because Jesus Christ do you even America bro? Anyway, I love country music. This is probably because I grew up in Western Iowa and you can't flip through the radio without hearing Toby Keith's name at least three times, but I don't care because there's a genuine joy in hearing music that is so brutally earnest and honest. Sure, you probably don't like it because it's not "cool" to like and you're checking your reflection in ever window you walk by on the sidewalk because you're overly concerned with how your pants are fitting, but loosen up, man. Grab a Budweiser and embrace your inner patriot.

Avail - “Pink Houses”
Right about now, I’m should be landing in another country, which might sound like an un-American place to spend the fourth of July. But don’t worry, I will spread the gospel of the good ol’ U-S-A abroad. That includes openly mocking people’s love of soccer, reminding everyone of “whose asses we saved in WWII,” and wearing this shirt. I will also be blasting Avail’s cover of “Pink Houses.” Have a good fourth, fellow patriots. U! S! A! U! S! A!

Thin Lizzy - "Rosalie"
Everybody's going big on America in this Insult2Injury, but to me one of the best parts of this July 4th weekend is kicking back, grilling and crushing beers while listening to bonafide classics. Here's one of the greatest bands of all time being cool as fuck before you were born.

Fatima Al Qadiri - "Star-Spangled"

Last Fourth, I accidentally spent the holiday in the most 'merican way ever: on a beach in Malibu swarmed by paparazzi and Kardashians. This holiday, I've learned my lesson-- instead of being forced to watch Scott Disick ride a jet ski in the Pacific Ocean, I'll be hanging on the other side of town and showing my patriotism by playing Fatima Al Qadiri's mangled interpretation of our national anthem #Amerigoth.
