At the mention of New Zealand most think of the country's rugged and scenic natural beauty rather than leotarded modern dance. But following Introverted Dancefloor’s video for “Happiness Is Such a Mess”, Auckland songwriter and producer Boycrush, aka Alistair Deverick, has released a video where a young and talented modern dancer is the star.
Shot in the Mungavin Hall in Porirua, the video features dancer Jadyn Burt, twisting and turning to the songs romantic dance beat.
Taken from Boycrush's Girls On Top EP, which has been nominated for the Critics Choice for the NZ Music Awards, the track features the vocals of Madeira (Kim Pflaum formally of Yumi Zouma). It’s fun and synthy funk that could well be one of the first tracks you need to add to your Southern Hemisphere summer beach mix.
Noisey: What's with New Zealand videos and modern dancing?
Alistair Deverick: Ha, let's call it synchronicity. I was talking with Bevan from Introverted Dancefloor about my video concept and he was like "dude check the video I just made!" Which is not so far from how mine turned out. I made mine anyway and actually ended up working with Rowan who did that Introverted Dancefloor video. I love both videos.
The track has a cool Southern Hemisphere summer vibe. What's the best thing to do in Auckland during summer?
Go to a West Coast beach, perhaps Karekare. Bring some food and too much weed and possibly sleep out there.
What does it mean to be nominated for the Critics Choice for the NZ Music Awards?
I guess it's nice to be nominated because any acknowledgement is kind of cool. It gets people to listen and watch and also open some doors and thus encourage you to do more stuff.
