No matter where we are in the world, whether it's the center of booming metropolis or the outskirts of some barren desert, we can always look up and bear witness to a constantly shifting wondrous display of nature in the sky above. This is a sentiment that photographer Chris Pritchard instills in his new 4K timelapse short film, Skylight. The Los Angeles and Chicago-based filmmaker has compiled five-plus years worth of footage, shot in 42 unique locations, into a single three-minute masterpiece.

Pritchard shot in a diverse selection of locations including Los Angeles, Chicago, and NYC as well as the Vermillion Cliffs, Death Valley, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, to name but a few. Breathtaking panoramic shots of America’s woodlands, mountain ranges, and arid deserts are juxtaposed against scenes of some of the world’s busiest urban landscapes. Skylight has got all the ingredients of a legendary natural timelapse: star-studded skies, explosive sunsets, grand images of the Milky Way, and of course some epic day-to-night transitions. Skylight contrasts the unpredictable quality of the natural world with the dependable presence of the sky.

Pritchard writes, “Shooting timelapse has taught me to sit back and take in the world around me. After six years and thousands of shots captured, I’ve seen some special and memorable events in our skies. No matter how dramatic the location, the sky holds the power to make a good view great, and to mesmerize us with the wonders of the world—within our atmosphere and beyond.”
