We Asked Some Artists to Respond to Bill Leak's Racist Cartoon

For every racist cartoonist—or commentator who thinks shitting on an entire community of people is funny—there are a whole lot of people who don't.

In these times of ours, it seems like not a day goes by that we aren't faced with some reminder of the way a huge swathe of the population perceives our country's First Peoples, and other people of colour. It seems too many people have actual, genuine garbage for brains.

Today's daily reminder came in the form of a disturbingly racist image from the The Australian 's resident shock-jock cartoonist Bill Leak. We won't post his image in this article, but you can see it here if you really must. Keep in mind that it's unbelievably offensive and may be quite triggering for some people.

There's one thing that's plainly obvious here: despite their potential for better judgement, or even a shred of humanity, both Leak and The Australian were acutely aware of the clicks controversy and outrage would get them. They made a decision to release this awful cartoon because it'll get page views and profit.

But that doesn't mean they've won.

See for every racist cartoonist—or commentator who thinks shitting on an entire community of people is funny—there are a whole lot of people who don't. So VICE decided to fight fire with fire, and ask some friends and illustrators to respond to Bill Leak and The Australian with their own cartoons, because two can play at that game.
