Watch the Trailer for Daniel Day-Lewis's Last Film Before Retirement

The actor plays a dressmaker in Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie, 'Phantom Thread.'

On Monday, Focus Features released the long-awaited first trailer for Phantom Thread, director Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature since 2014's Inherent Vice.

Information about the movie has been pretty sparse so far—save for the fact that it stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a dressmaker in 1950s London, is the last film he made before announcing his retirement, and supposedly inspired him to make gowns full time.

But according to a recent film synopsis, Phantom Thread centers on "renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister, Cyril (Lesley Manville)," who are at the center of the post-war British fashion world. Woodcock is an aging, confirmed bachelor who starts to question his lifestyle after meeting "a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover."

The new trailer gives us a look at Woodcock, Alma, and the way their burgeoning relationship breaks the dressmaker out of his rigid, structured life.

"You can sew almost anything into the canvas of a coat," Woodcock says in the clip. "When I was a boy, I started to hide things into the linings of the garments. Things that only I knew were there," he continues, stitching Alma's name into a piece of clothing. "Secrets."

The shots in the trailer showcase Anderson's set design and eye for composition—which should be in full effect on Phantom Thread since the film will be the first time the director handled cinematography duties himself, as well.

Give the trailer a watch above and catch Phantom Thread in theaters this Christmas.
